An artist based in Hexham, Sue Malkin has been a well established painter in the region after moving here from France 13 years ago where her work won many awards. She has exhibited widely in public and private galleries and has paintings and drawings in many private collections.
Her current work, characterised by strong compositions, continues to be based on drawings and photos of horses and jockeys. She works in oil on canvas with bold and loose brushwork complementing the sense of movement that is inherent in all her work. A fine sense of draughtsmanship, the result of many years of life drawing, underpins her paintings, and allows her to explore the dramatic qualities of speed, adrenalin, and tension that a race meeting has in abundance. The hallmark of her work is her ability to capture or imply movement with skill and confidence, together with a vibrant use of colour.
